Facts

1 in 4 of the population suffer from a mild to moderate mental health problem

Ten million working days were lost to stress, depression and anxiety in 2005/6

Total cost to employers of mental health problems among their staff is estimated at nearly £26 billion each year equivalent to £1,035 per employee

World Health Organisation estimates that by 2020 depression will become the second most significant cause of disability in the world

High psychological distress is pervasive across all employee subtypes and remains largely untreated but the vast majority of people who develop problems can and do make a recovery with appropriate treatment

76% of people in England with a mental health problem are not currently receiving any kind of treatment

(NHS Information Centre Survey 2007).

Mental illness is generally more debilitating than most physical conditions

Half of all patients with anxiety conditions will recover, most permanently after an average of 10 treatment sessions and half of those with depression will recover with a much diminished risk of relapse

(How mental illness loses out in the NHS LSE 2012).

Myth: people with mental illness never recover.
